AICD Implantation

What is AICD Implantation?

An Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) is a small, battery-powered device placed under the skin, typically just below the collarbone. It is connected to leads (thin wires) that are inserted into the heart through blood vessels. The primary functions of an ICD are

  • 1. Monitoring : The ICD continuously monitors the heart's electrical activity, tracking for abnormal rhythms, especially life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias.
  • 2.Treatment : If a dangerous heart rhythm, such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, is detected, the ICD can deliver an electrical shock to restore the heart's normal rhythm. This shock is referred to as defibrillation.

Who Needs AICD Implantation?

1. Prior Cardiac Arrest : Individuals who have survived sudden cardiac arrest, often due to ventricular fibrillation, are prime candidates for ICDs.

2. Severe Heart Failure : Patients with severe heart failure, especially when accompanied by a low ejection fraction, may benefit from an ICD to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death.

3. High-Risk Arrhythmias : People with a history of serious ventricular arrhythmias or specific heart conditions that increase the risk of arrhythmias may be candidates for ICDs.

Benefits of AICD Implantation

1. Lifesaving Intervention : AICDs can quickly respond to life-threatening arrhythmias, providing an immediate and often life-saving electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm.

2. Reduced Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death : For those at high risk of sudden cardiac death, an ICD can significantly reduce this risk, providing peace of mind and improved quality of life.

3. Continuous Monitoring : The device continuously monitors the heart, allowing for early detection of arrhythmias and prompt intervention.

4. Improved Longevity : Many individuals who receive an ICD can lead longer, healthier lives with better management of their heart conditions.
